Hygiene Kills More Than Disasters Do
The real killer in every crisis
After nearly every disaster in history, more people died of disease than of the event itself โ cholera, dysentery, typhoid, all born from failed sanitation. In survival, your two biggest enemies are invisible: contaminated water and the fecal-hand-mouth cycle. Hygiene is not comfort; it is your front-line medicine.
The cycle you must break
The disease cycle is simple: waste โ hands or flies โ food or water โ mouth โ illness โ weakness โ worse hygiene. Every hygiene skill in this course โ handwashing, latrines, water treatment, waste control โ is a link in that chain you can cut.
The five non-negotiables
- Wash hands after latrine use and before anything touching food.
- Never defecate near water โ 60+ meters and downhill.
- Treat all water before drinking.
- Keep flies off food and waste โ flies are the ferry service of disease.
- Keep the camp clean โ garbage and scraps attract pests that carry disease.
Key takeaway: Clean hands, clean water, clean camp โ cut the disease cycle at any link and you win the war you cannot see.
